Fans: More Cowbell! Make some noise along the racecourse!

When it comes to cycling, one of the best activities for spectators is to make some noise! It matters not whether you’re shaking a cow bell, making cricket sounds with a clicker, shaking a closed container with a few pebbles or seeking out the notorious inflatable thunder sticks.

No one is quite clear on how cowbells became a staple at sporting events. Some theorize that in the early days of baseball, a cow wandered into the playing area and alerted players to a special spectator. Others surmise that because baseball games were played in pastures, perhaps a fan heard the cow’s bell and decided that ringing the bell was the best thing to do to cheer on the home team.

For a brief time, the Southeastern Conference football games attempted to ban cowbells but to no avail. Fans were not willing to give up their cowbells, which they associated with “good luck” from the cows. At some point, bells and other noisemakers infiltrated other sports including ski racing and cycling among them.

So bring your noisemakers out to the Exergy Tour and cheer the ladies on to victory!
